Meinklang – Weißer Mulatschak

Meinklang is a family-run biodynamic estate based in Burgenland, Austria, on the eastern shores of Lake Neusiedl. The Michlits family has transformed the farm into a living ecosystem: cattle, grains, orchards, and vines coexist in complete balance. Their philosophy is rooted in respect for nature, letting wines evolve with minimal interference and maximum life.

The Weißer Mulatschak (literally “white commotion”) is one of their most expressive and playful cuvées, embodying everything natural wine is meant to be: unfiltered, spontaneous, and full of energy.

Type: Skin-Contact White (Orange Wine)

Skin-contact white means a white wine made like a red. Instead of pressing the grapes right away, the juice is left in contact with the skins for several days, extracting color, tannins, and texture. This process gives the wine its amber hue, a touch of grip, and a more complex, tea-like structure. It’s not sweet; it’s dry, layered, and often aromatic. Think of it as a white wine with a little more attitude and depth.

Grapes: Welschriesling, Pinot Gris, Traminer

The Welschriesling brings acidity and freshness, its role is to keep the wine bright and mouthwatering. Pinot Gris adds body, texture, and soft fruit tones, while Traminer (from the same family as Gewürztraminer) brings floral aromatics and a hint of exotic spice. Together, they create a wine that feels alive—crisp, slightly hazy, and full of citrus and apricot energy.

It’s the perfect introduction to the world of orange wines: balanced, approachable, and expressive of Meinklang’s raw, biodynamic touch.

Viticulture & Vinification

  • Region: Burgenland, Austria

  • Vineyards: Gols, near the eastern edge of Lake Neusiedl

  • Farming: Fully biodynamic (Demeter certified), mixed farming with livestock integration

  • Harvest: Hand-harvested grapes, fermented together

  • Vinification: 5–7 days of skin maceration for color, aroma, and texture

  • Fermentation: Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts

  • Élevage: Aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aromatics

  • Clarification: Unfined and unfiltered

  • Sulfur: Minimal addition at bottling

  • Alcohol: ~11.5%

This wine is an 11/10 for me. As I mentioned above, it’s the perfect introduction to skin-contact or orange wines, as it is complex on the palate yet incredibly easy and approachable. It delivers texture, freshness, and character without ever feeling heavy or forced. Plus, it’s remarkably affordable, which makes it not just a great bottle, but a smart one to always have on hand.
